I’ve tried to keep the information in the body of the article as short and as simple as possible, and I’ve avoided, as much as possible, using Greek. She’s not adamant that the Mary in John 11–12 is Mary M. She uses words such as “may” and “if,” for example. Using readings found in P 66 and other ancient witnesses, I will then make a tentative attempt to reconstruct the opening verses of John 11 without Martha. My goal is to demonstrate that the initial circulating version of the Gospel of John may not have included Martha, and thus that P 66 may provide a window into a late scribal interpolation that is now part of our received Gospel text. People have been asking me about Elizabeth Schrader’s hypothesis that Mary Magdalene (one woman), and not Mary and Martha of Bethany (two sisters), is the main female character in John 11 and 12.
